Benchrest Matches – Rimfire Rifle and Air Rifle

11×17 Factory Class Target

  • Match Location: Pistol Range (Enter thru Gate B)
  • Typical Match Times: 8 am registration, 8:30 am safety meeting, 9 am match start.
    • Start time maybe modified to a later hour when colder temperatures occur.
  • Governing Organization: American Rimfire Association
    • All shooters are highly recommended to review the current ARA rulebook.
  • Format: Rimfire rifle and air rifle match will consist of three relays of 25 shot targets for aggregate.
    • Air Rifles will shoot separate relays from Rimfire Rifles.
    • Scoring is worst edge. 100 points max per bull. 2500 points max per target. 7500 points max per match.
    • Each bull is scored with these values only: 100, 50, 25, 10 or 0.
  • Distances:
    • Rimfire rifles will be shot at 50 yards.
    • Air Rifle (.177 & .22 caliber) will be shot at 25 yards using Unlimited Class Targets.
    • Big Bore Air Rifles (larger than .22 caliber) will be shot at 50 yards using Factory Class Targets.
  • Relay Time Limit & Number of Shots: 20 minutes to shoot 25 record shots and any sighter/practice shots.
  • Mandatory bench assignment by lottery and shifting to another bench (usually three benches to the right) after each relay.
  • Three Rimfire Rifle Categories:
    • Unlimited – Any modifications allowed.
    • Factory Class – Unmodified Rifles based on approved listed here: https://www.americanrimfire.com/media/rules/ARA_factory_approved_rifles_202403.pdf
    • Sporter Class10 1/2-pound max Weight with scope (no magazine). 2-pound minimum trigger pull. 9X max optic magnification.
      • Modifications to factory rifles of a sporting character, such as a barrel, trigger, or stock upgrade are allowed.  
  • Spotting scopes are highly recommended especially when shooting in the Sporter class.
  • Ammunition must be widely available standard velocity .22 LR
  • Domed air rifle pellets are highly recommended (most aerodynamic).
  • Standard range safety protocols will apply.
    • Eye and ear protection are required.
    • Use of lights and buzzer for cold and hot lines.
    • Empty chamber indicators will be used. Extra-long ones are recommended for air rifles leaving it hanging from the muzzle end.
    • Rifles must be cased when moving from one bench to another.
  • An adjustable height chair (drummer’s seat) is highly recommended.
  • An adjustable height front bag rest or bipods and rear bag rest are recommended.
  • Non-RFG members must sign waiver good for current year.

Wednesday Night Benchrest League

  • Open to all including the public.
  • Time: 5 pm – 7 pm
  • Format: Two relays of 25 shot targets including sighters and practice shots.
  • Duration: 18 weeks total. Wednesday of every two weeks from April to October.
